The retrofitMAINE initiative uses high-performance building science and energy efficiency principles to help Maine homes become greener, safer, more comfortable and more affordable. retrofit dataretrofit resources
Calling all homeowners!
Our next passivhausMAINE retrofitting training happens June 9 in York. This $25, day-long session will get you started with retrofit planning in Maine.

The goal of retrofitMAINE is to support and analyze high-efficiency retrofits of common Maine home types. To do this, we provide free energy coaching, collect data of Maine retrofits and provide retrofit-focused trades training.
Collecting lots of data helps us understand what support is needed!
Have a retrofit to share? Let us know.
history
The retrofitMAINE initiative began in mid-2020 as ’50 Houses’ a passivhausMAINE program to record data from 50 high-efficiency home retrofits and rebuilds. In 2021, a survey was sent out and the online database was launched. In 2023, the program was expanded to develop insights for homeowners and builders and begin publishing resources around home upgrades.
That same year, retrofitMAINE was awarded as a winner of the DOE’s BuildingsUP grant, enabling us to redouble our search for retrofit data. In November 2023, passivhausMAINE began looking for a manager to lead the initiative. And in the spring of 2024, Mika Hemings was brought on to direct the growing program.
Since then, retrofitMAINE has connected with communities in southern and central Maine to educate and collect research data, and has continued to expand with the launch of training programs, energy coaching and the retrofitMAINE Symposium.
